FinKut vs ChatGPT
A tool built for stock research, or an assistant that does everything?

The short answer
FinKut is built only for stock research. SEC filings, earnings calls and financial statements for US companies are already inside, and every answer is tied to a passage in those documents with a numbered source. If you follow many companies regularly, it does the finding, uploading and number-checking for you.
ChatGPT is a good general assistant for everything: it searches the web, reads a 10-K you upload, and Plus costs $20 a month. If you look at a company now and then and already pay for ChatGPT, it is often enough.
Which one fits you?
FinKut is the better fit if
- you want to see with one click which filing and which paragraph a number came from.
- you don't want to find and upload the filing every time.
- you want to follow earnings calls in the same format every quarter.
- you want 13F and congressional trades in the same place.
ChatGPT is the better fit if
- you want one assistant for everything, not just research.
- you already pay for Plus or a higher plan.
- you look at companies outside the US or at private companies.
- you want to upload your own documents (slides, notes, Excel) and ask about them.

Reading a 10-K in FinKut and in ChatGPT
In FinKut the filing is already there. Open the 10-K analysis and you get the same layout for every company: an investor assessment, then summary, business, financials, risks, management, capital and markets, and outlook. Findings come with the quotes they rest on; for a filing without a ready analysis you request one with credits. If you want to ask something, chat answers come with numbered sources, and from Researcher up you choose which filings it reads.
In ChatGPT you first find the filing: download it from SEC EDGAR and upload it, or wait for it to find the filing on the web. Then you ask your questions. You repeat this for every new company and every new quarter, and the format of the answer changes with your question.
How far can you trust the numbers?
In FinKut, financial numbers come from the data companies report, values such as the earnings surprise are calculated, every claim in chat is tied to a passage that opens with a click, and quotes that cannot be matched to the transcript are hidden by default. FinKut uses a language model too and can be wrong; the difference is that checking takes one click.
That check matters because language models still make mistakes on financial filings. In the version of Vals AI's Finance Agent benchmark updated on October 27, 2026, the best model answered 67.85% of analyst-level questions correctly, and OpenAI's best-scoring model on the benchmark, GPT-6.1 Sol, 61.82%. The benchmark measures models, not the ChatGPT app, but the message is clear: even the best models get roughly one in three hard questions wrong. OpenAI's own help page also says web sources can be incomplete, out of date or wrong.
If you already pay for ChatGPT
FinKut Researcher is $29.99 a month and only for research. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and useful for other work too; if you already pay for it, stock research costs nothing extra. That is why we gave the price row to ChatGPT.
The choice depends on how much time you spend on research. If you read several filings and calls a week, the time spent finding filings and checking numbers adds up fast. You can also use both: take sourced numbers from FinKut and write your notes with ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions
ChatGPT or FinKut for stock research?
FinKut, if you follow many companies regularly and want to check numbers against their source and compare quarters in the same format: filings and transcripts are ready and every answer is tied to its source. If you look at a company now and then and already pay for ChatGPT, ChatGPT may be enough.
Do I have to find and upload the 10-K myself in FinKut?
No. 10-Ks and 10-Qs for more than 5,800 US companies, more than 170,000 call transcripts and the financial statements are already inside. From Researcher up, you also choose which filings chat reads.
How do I see where a number in FinKut comes from?
Claims in Research Chat answers carry numbered sources; click one and the filing or transcript passage, the financial statement line or the news story opens in place. 10-K findings come with the quotes they rest on, and points in the call analysis are tied to the sentence in the transcript; points that cannot be matched to the transcript are hidden by default.
What does FinKut show for an earnings call?
Every piece of guidance management gives, with its range, its direction against the previous call (new, raised, maintained, lowered) and the analyst estimate next to it. Each answer to an analyst question is marked direct, partial or evasive. With sources, it also lists red flags checked against the 10-Q, such as one-off items, non-GAAP emphasis or quietly lowered expectations, the KPIs mentioned on the call, and topics discussed more or less than before. The earnings surprise, the direction of guidance and the market reaction are calculated from data.
What other tools does FinKut have?
Reflex (early access: ask the same questions of up to 25 companies at once), a chart builder, a stock screener, peer comparison, analyst estimates and DCF, news intelligence, 13F institutional holdings, congressional trading and research reports. Some are open as previews on Free, some from Researcher up.
Can I trust the financial numbers ChatGPT gives me?
Not without checking. OpenAI's help page says web sources can be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and in the independent Vals AI benchmark (October 2026) even the best models got roughly a third of analyst-level questions wrong. In FinKut, the source of every number opens with one click.
Which AI model does FinKut use?
FinKut routes each task to the models and tools that suit it, and the choice can change as better models come out. The rule that does not change: answers show their sources.
Is FinKut free?
Yes, and no card is needed: 30 chat messages, 4 filing-analysis credits and 2 call analyses a month, with the screener, chart builder, 13F and congressional trades open too. Paid plans start at $29.99 a month.
